Improve your employees health with a Workspace Nudge

Improve your employees health with a Workspace Nudge

Did you know that the 15 feet around each of your employees, has a profound effect on the health and wellness of your employees?

In a recent article written by the experts at Haworth, they detail how the 15 feet around your employees, impacts almost every system of the body.  The chair that your employees sit in and how much they move affects their muscular and skeletal systems; noise and distractions affect the immune system because they increase stress; the amount of access to natural light affects the endocrine system.  Each area of space that is within the 15 feet of your employees, affects another system in their bodies.

Studies have indicated that “healthcare costs per employee are expected to rise to $25K by 2025.”  Because every company is impacted by rising healthcare costs, effective office design has a huge impact on your bottom line.  Furthermore, 90% of most people spend their time indoors, most of which is spent at their jobs. Considering these statistics and the need for improved employee wellness, the Haworth research team studied the new discipline of applying behavioral economics to workspace design called the Workspace Nudge™.

What is the Workspace Nudge™?

This new discipline takes into account every single factor that affects the health and well-being of your employees.  A Workspace Nudge encourages and prompts employees to move, focus and connect and the outcome is that behaviors begin to change which ultimately improves the health of your employees, decreases sick days and creates a more positive work environment.  Over the years, lots of money has been invested in wellness programs, the good thing about a Workspace Nudge™ is that it is impactful without a lot of cost.

Check out the article here for ways that Haworth suggests that you can nudge your employees into healthier behaviors with design.

Inspire Connections In The Workplace with Office Furniture

Inspire Connections In The Workplace with Office Furniture

A recent study has found that nearly half of all Americans feel lonely—young people, in particular, are experiencing the most loneliness. Loneliness is also prevalent in the American workplace, which impacts employee happiness and well-being, collaboration, creativity, innovation and productivity.

While it is hard to pinpoint what is causing this loneliness epidemic, many experts agree that the increased use of technology has a lot to do with it. Technology has its benefits, such as allowing for anytime, anywhere communication, but social media, email and texting, although convenient, may be isolating us. On the other side of this, studies have also found that people who engage in daily face-to-face interaction are less lonely than those who don’t.

Many businesses have take notice to the connection between human interaction and its effect on loneliness and well-being and are working to create more ways for their employees to connect with each other. Remote work is still a popular option for employees, but companies are starting to invest more in their physical spaces to entice their employees to come into the office more often.

Here are just a few ways you can create opportunities for more face-to-face interaction for your employees, and in the process promote creativity, collaboration and innovation.

  • Open spaces and benching workstations– an excellent way for employees to interact and connect
  • Comfortable, home-like spaces–ideal for group work and meetings
  • Flexible floorplans that offer opportunities for impromptu meetings as people move throughout the space

Embrace Technology

Technology is all around us, from self-driving cars to Amazon delivery drones, the future is here.  Not only is technology super cool, but it has a way of making our lives more efficient and easier. Is your workspace keeping up with the lightning speed at which technology keeps changing?

When you start to take steps to fully integrate your space with technology your company will reap amazing benefits, such as: increased productivity, improved functionality and a higher level of employee engagement.  One of the best times to assess your workplace technology is when you are planning an office redesign or relocation. With the help of an expert, like the designers at Bellia, you can use the time before your redesign or relocation to research the available technologies that will benefit your business most.

Furniture manufacturers are now designing furnishings with technology integrated into them.  From conferences tables and desks to seating and other furnishings, selecting furniture with power and data ports built right into them is important to encourage collaboration and provide easy accessibility for your staff. For example, Haworth’s Workware™ line integrates adaptable technology solutions for collaboration and sharing.

Offices can now incorporate interactive whiteboards and audio visual screens that are easy to connect to, automated conference room booking systems, and built-in power adapters and charging stations throughout the workspace.  With open floor plans, employees move fluidly throughout a space setting up their laptops wherever they land, which supports creativity, collaboration and efficiency. But before this environment can happen, your office must be set-up with a framework that will support it, so that’s why the best time to assess your office’s technology is during a relocation or a redesign.

If your office is in need of update or you are planning on a move, it’s important to partner with Bellia right at the beginning. Our experienced team will help you incorporate the best technology and furniture for your space to keep you up-to-date and competitive.  Call us today to get started!

Reducing Wait Time to Increase Patient Experience

Numerous studies have been conducted correlating a person’s level of satisfaction with an experience to their wait time. Typically, the longer the wait the less satisfied an individual is with their experience and vice versa. Haworth collaborated with SDI Consulting to explore factors that
influence the impact of waiting on patient satisfaction and how well-designed waiting areas can improve the experience of waiting in healthcare environments. Follow the link below to go to Haworth’s whitepaper.

Four Generations in the Workspace: Creating an Agile and Legible Space

Business are about to face a unique challenge. In just a few years, workspaces are going to need to accommodate four generations of workers with vastly different workstyles. Because your office space has an impact on employee satisfaction, engagement and well-being, it is essential for organizations to create an agile workplace–one which empowers your employees to choose how, when and where they will work.

The Four Generations
Because each generation has diverse workstyles and differing perspectives, let’s take a look at the four generations:

Gen Y–this group makes up the largest group of workers. This group wants choice over location. They demand a variety of spaces to use.
Gen Xers–grew up in an era of instability caused by mass layoffs and rampant divorce—they value clarity, order, and certainty. At the same time, Gen Xers are often distracted and multitasking.
Among Gen Z, the oldest are still in high school, and they are being raised to appreciate stability, order, and predictability in their lives. Prone to distraction like their Gen X parents, they will struggle to manage interpersonal work relationships as adults.
Baby Boomers are still years away from retirement. They are generally hard-workers who believe that work is done at the office, while they use technology, they aren’t completely sold on the ability of technology to create flexibility in their work environment.

Creating an Agile and Legible Space
To accommodate all the generations in the same space, your office needs to be an agile workplace which allows employees to be in charge of where, when, and how they work. When a work environment is agile, employees will feel comfortable and in control.

However, when an agile space isn’t well-planned, it can lead to a lot of confusion for employees who are unsure about the intended use of different areas in the office. So, not only must space be agile, it must be legible as well. Legibility means that people can quickly create a mental map of the layout, it is easily navigable due to visible landmarks, and signs and graphics provide clues and to the location and intended use of the space.

While the different generations all have unique styles, when it comes to office space, they want similar things like privacy, comfort, access to technology and flexibility. Creating an agile, legible space will provide exactly what each generation needs to be productive, engaged and happy in their work environment.

7 Things To Consider When Designing For Institutions Of Higher Learning

As the higher education model continues to evolve, keeping up with student and faculty expectations, quickly advancing technology and changing teaching methods and modalities is a challenge. Institutions of higher learning are now investing heavily in new campus facilities, understanding that campuses are no longer just only a place to learn, but have become places where students and faculty can eat, socialize, network, study, and relax. In a recent piece written by the designers at Haworth, there are seven things to consider when designing for institutions of higher learning.

Welcoming
While this one might seem obvious, it is important to remember that students and staff want all the facilities to embody a safe and welcoming atmosphere. When a space is welcoming and comfortable, it will promote interaction and collaboration.

Accommodating
To support learning, flexibility and differentiation, spaces should accommodate multiple teaching and learning styles.

Livable 24/7
While campuses are primarily a learning environment, that is not their only function. Campuses have become 24/7 lifestyle spaces where students work, study, socialize, play, rest and relax. Spaces should be designed keeping these functions in mind and complement safe, secure and easily navigable campus.

Affordable
The design experts at Haworth say it best, “Higher education is more than a sticker price on tuition. Its a return on investment that includes instructors, student services and administrative support among other expenses. When you leverage cost effective resources to design spaces on campus, you will add value to your offering.”

On Brand
The spaces need to create an inviting environment that reflect the brand of the particular campus. The design, colors and materials you choose will attract prospective students, impress parents, and engage current students, staff and alumni.

Flexible and Adaptable
Today’s campuses are comprised of a diverse population that has a variety of needs. Spaces should be designed to have multiple uses and be able to change quickly to accommodate the differing needs of students and staff.

Functional
It goes without saying that the design needs to be functional, but now campus buildings must be designed with a multi-use function in mind. Buildings should be technology-integrated, comfortable and flexible to create an inviting and welcoming collegiate atmosphere.
Bellia has extensive experience in the design of institutions of higher learning.

Here are a few of our recent projects:

Rutgers Camden Nursing and Science Building: Working with architect Perkins Eastman, Bellia created a state-of-the-art facility that will serve as a world-class research and teaching facility for students and faculty in the areas of Nursing and the sciences. The world-class facility includes classrooms, computer labs, conference rooms, lecture halls, student work and study stations and administrative offices.

Ocean County College: The Bellia team was closely involved in designing the Jon and Judith Larson Student Center to meet their objectives of creating energy efficient, innovative, and collaborative environment that enhances student success.
